Chapter 1 - The Call from Union Station

The silence on the line felt heavier than a physical weight.

I stared at the airport police officer, my heart hammering furiously against my ribs.

Ava’s tiny voice echoed in my ear again, terrified and trembling.

“Aunt Megan, he said we are going on a long trip.”

My mind raced, piecing together the fractured puzzle of my family’s betrayal.

My ex-husband, David, was supposed to be in New York on a business trip.

Instead, his name was being broadcast over a loudspeaker at a local train station.

“Ava, sweetie, listen to me very carefully,” I said, forcing my voice to remain calm.

“Look around and tell me what the big sign says above the ticket counter.”

I heard the shuffling of her small feet and the distant rumble of an approaching train.

“It says Union Station,” she whispered.

Union Station was barely twenty miles from the airport.

David hadn't just orchestrated the theft of my divorce evidence.

He had kidnapped my niece to ensure my sister's compliance in his twisted scheme.

I waved frantically at the police officer, mouthing the words 'Union Station'.

Officer Miller immediately unclipped his radio, barking orders to dispatch units to the downtown transit hub.

“Ava, I need you to find a security guard or a police officer and hand them the phone,” I instructed.

“I can’t,” she sobbed softly.

“Uncle David is coming back from the ticket machine.”

Panic flared in my chest like a lit match.

“Hide, Ava,” I commanded.

“Get under a bench, go into the women's restroom, just get out of his sight right now.”

The line went dead with a sharp click.

I dropped the phone, my hands shaking violently as I looked down at my own daughter, Lucy.

She was clutching my leg, her tear-stained face staring up at me with wide, innocent eyes.

My family had abandoned her, stolen my only leverage, and handed my niece over to a monster.

I wasn’t just going to report this to the authorities anymore.

I was going to destroy every single one of them.
