Chapter 6 - The Setup

The safe house was a modest, unassuming brick building on the outskirts of the city.
I tucked Lucy and Ava into a double bed, reading them a story until their breathing grew heavy and even.
They had been through hell, but they were safe now.
I kissed both of their foreheads and quietly slipped out of the room.
Detective Evans was waiting in the small kitchen, laying out a tactical map of Pier 44 on the table.
“The docks are mostly abandoned, which gives us a tactical advantage,” Evans explained, pointing to various entry points.
“We will have snipers on the roof of warehouse seven and undercover units in unmarked cars blocking the exits.”
I nodded, adjusting the Kevlar vest they had insisted I wear under my bulky winter coat.
“He’s going to be paranoid,” I warned them.
“David is arrogant, but he isn't stupid.”
“He will likely have a vehicle waiting with the engine running.”
“We’ve accounted for that,” Evans assured me.
“You just need to get him to hand over the folder and admit to the theft on the wire.”
I tapped the small microphone taped to my collarbone.
The gravity of the situation was finally starting to settle into my bones.
I was about to confront the man who had ruined my life, manipulated my family, and endangered my child.
I wasn't just doing this for the money he stole from our joint accounts.
I was doing this to reclaim my power.
I climbed into the passenger seat of an unmarked police van.
The drive to the docks was silent, the tension in the vehicle thick enough to cut with a knife.
Rain began to patter against the windshield, casting distorted, shadowy reflections of the streetlights.
It was a fitting night for a reckoning.

As we pulled into the designated staging area, I took a deep, steadying breath.
It was time to end this.
