Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Six months later, life looked completely different.

I was sitting on the back porch of my newly renovated home, watching the sunset paint the sky in shades of gold and pink.

The yard was filled with the joyful sounds of children laughing.

Lucy, Ava, and Tyler were running through the sprinklers, chasing the neighbor’s golden retriever.

They had bonded tightly over the shared trauma, becoming more like siblings than cousins.

Therapy had worked wonders for all of them, especially Ava.

She no longer woke up crying from nightmares about train stations.

My sister, Sarah, had recently taken a plea deal, accepting a five-year sentence in a state penitentiary.

My parents had avoided jail time by cooperating with the FBI, but they were bankrupt and living in a tiny subsidized apartment.

They had tried to call me a few times, leaving tearful voicemails begging for forgiveness.

I never called them back.

Some betrayals cut too deep to ever heal, and my only priority was protecting the children in my care.

I had legally started the process to adopt Ava and Tyler.

David’s trial was scheduled for the fall, but the prosecutors assured me he would never see the outside of a cell again.

I took a sip of my iced tea, leaning back in the comfortable wicker chair.

I had lost my entire biological family in a single, chaotic weekend.

But looking out at the yard, watching Lucy tackle Tyler into the soft green grass while Ava cheered, I realized something important.

Family isn't always the people who share your blood.

May you like

Sometimes, family is the people who stand by you when the world falls apart.

I smiled, finally at peace, knowing that we were going to be okay.
