Chapter 9 - The Final Verdict and a New Beginning

Six months later, the criminal trial finally concluded.
I sat in the front row of the courtroom, holding Maya’s hand tightly in mine.
She was doing so much better now, with bright eyes and a healthy, glowing smile.
Leo was sitting happily on my lap, chewing on a plastic dinosaur toy.
The jury filed into the room, their faces completely stoic and unreadable.
Rebecca stood up, looking incredibly pale, thin, and completely broken.
"On the charge of felony child abuse, we find the defendant guilty," the foreman read aloud.
"On the charge of grand larceny, we find the defendant guilty."
The judge didn't show even a fraction of mercy during the sentencing phase.
"Ms. Hughes, you preyed upon grieving, defenseless children," he said with absolute disgust.
"I am sentencing you to fifteen years in federal prison without the possibility of early parole."
Rebecca collapsed into her heavy wooden chair, sobbing loudly.
She looked back at me, begging for a single shred of sympathy.
I didn't give her one.
I simply turned my back on her and picked up my son.
"Let's go home, guys," I smiled at my kids.
As we walked out of the heavy courtroom doors, the warm sun hit our faces.
The nightmare was officially over, and the monster was locked in a real cage.
Today, our house is filled with laughter, finger paintings, and endless love.
