Chapter 2 - The Emergency Room

The heavy metal doors of the police cruiser slammed shut in my driveway.
The sound echoed through the quiet suburban neighborhood like a gunshot.
I watched from the front window as the flashing red and blue lights slowly faded down the street.
Rebecca was gone, locked in the back of a squad car where she belonged.
But the nightmare inside my home was far from over.
I turned around and looked at my two beautiful, broken children.
Maria, our housekeeper, was rocking Leo gently in her arms, tears streaming down her weathered face.
Maya was sitting on the bottom step of the staircase, staring blankly at the wall.
She was still clutching the frayed edges of her sketchbook like it was a shield.
"Maria, please pack a small bag with pajamas and toothbrushes for the kids," I instructed quietly.
"We are not staying in this house tonight."
I refused to let my children sleep another minute in the place where they had been tortured.
I grabbed my car keys and gently scooped Leo into my arms.
His little body felt completely weightless, a terrifying reality that made my chest ache.
I held Maya's hand, and we walked out into the cool night air.
I drove straight to Boston General, the hospital where I served as Chief of Surgery.
I bypassed the crowded waiting room and badged directly into the VIP pediatric wing.
The night staff looked up in absolute shock to see me in casual clothes, holding two filthy children.
"Dr. Sterling, what happened?" asked Brenda, the head charge nurse.
"I need a full trauma workup on both of them immediately," I demanded, my voice cracking.
"Blood panels, toxicology, full-body X-rays, and a pediatric psychologist on standby."
Brenda didn't ask any more questions.
She immediately signaled for two stretchers and ushered us into a private examination suite.
For the next four hours, I sat in the corner of the sterile room and watched my colleagues examine my world.
Every new bruise they documented felt like a personal failure on my part.

I had spent my entire life learning how to heal strangers, only to let my own flesh and blood be destroyed.
I silently swore that Rebecca would pay for every single mark on their bodies.
