Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Empire

With Rebecca securely behind bars, I focused on completely ruining her life.
The criminal trial was pending, but the civil suit moved at lightning speed.
Because we had the bank records and the audio confession, the court froze all her assets.
The offshore accounts were seized and the money was returned to my children.
Her luxury sports car was repossessed in the middle of the night.
Her expensive downtown condo was foreclosed on by the bank.
Every single dime she had stolen was legally ripped from her hands.
But my most important move had nothing to do with revenge.
I contacted the medical board and officially resigned from my position as Chief of Surgery.
My colleagues were in absolute shock, begging me to reconsider.
"Your career is at its absolute peak, Arthur," the hospital director pleaded.
"My career means nothing if my children are suffering in the shadows," I told him firmly.
"I am taking a position as a general consultant with flexible, daytime hours."
I packed up my corner office without feeling a single ounce of regret.
I traded my hundred-hour work weeks for morning school drop-offs.

I traded emergency boardroom meetings for bedtime stories and weekend park trips.
I finally understood that financial security could never replace a father's actual presence.
