Chapter 5 - The Grandparents' Attack

On Tuesday evening, I finally took the kids back home.
I had hired a private security guard to stand at the end of my driveway.
I was making dinner in the kitchen when the doorbell rang aggressively.
I looked at the security monitors and saw Sarah’s parents, Richard and Helen Hughes, arguing with my guard.
I stepped outside, telling Maria to keep the children in the living room.
"How dare you have our daughter thrown in a jail cell!" Helen screamed over the gate.
"You are a monster, Arthur!"
"Your daughter is a child abuser and a thief," I replied coldly, walking down the driveway.
"Rebecca told us you were having a mental breakdown!" Richard yelled, his face turning red.
"She said you hurt Maya, and she was only trying to protect the children from you!"
I stared at my in-laws, completely disgusted by their blind, toxic loyalty.
"I have hospital records proving she broke Maya's collarbone," I stated firmly.
"You manipulated those doctors because you are the Chief of Surgery!" Helen cried hysterically.
"We are filing for emergency custody of the children tomorrow morning."
They wanted to take my kids away and hand them right back to their abuser.
"If you try to take my kids, I will destroy your reputation in this city," I warned them.
"I will make sure the press knows you defended a monster for the sake of your family pride."

I signaled the guard to remove them from the property.
I walked back inside, knowing the biggest battle was yet to come.
