Chapter 7 - The Cornered Rats

The five women who had helped Beatrice beat my daughter were not hardened criminals. They were bored, wealthy housewives and desperate cousins of the Sterling family.
When Victor’s lawyers served them with multi-million dollar civil lawsuits for their participation in the assault, their loyalty to Beatrice evaporated overnight.
Within 48 hours, all five women had gone to the DA's office to cut a deal. They flipped on Beatrice, providing written testimonies detailing how she had planned the attack for weeks, instructing them to "break the girl's spirit" so they could secure the $2.1 million brownstone to pay off the family debts.
Liam, sitting in a cheap motel after his mother’s estate was seized by Victor's bank, tried to play his final card.
He showed up at the brownstone, where Maya was staying with heavy security. He bypassed the gates and stood on the front lawn in the pouring rain, holding a boombox like some pathetic romantic comedy hero, crying out for her.
"Maya! Please! I didn't want to do it! She forced me! I love you!"

Maya didn't go outside. Instead, she hit a button on the intercom system.
"I'm filing for an annulment, Liam. And if you ever step foot on my property again, my father's security team will break both of your legs. Goodbye."
