Chapter 4 - The Confession

Beatrice stepped forward, her heels clicking on my hardwood floor. "Now, Maya, darling," she said, her voice dripping with fake sympathy. "Let's not be dramatic. We had a… misunderstanding. You were hysterical. The girls and I had to restrain you."

"Restrain me?" Maya's voice shook. "You locked the door. You hit me thirty times. You demanded I sign over my brownstone."

Liam grabbed Maya's hands, trying to force a gentle squeeze. "Maya, my mother was just trying to protect our family's future. You were being selfish. Marriage is about sharing assets. If you had just signed the paperwork, none of this would have happened."

In his arrogance, he had just confessed. To all of it.

"You stood outside the door," Maya cried, tears of pure rage spilling over. "I heard you tell them not to hit my face too hard."

Liam sighed, running a hand through his perfect hair. "Because you were being stubborn! Maya, look, we can put this behind us. We’ll go to Paris. Just sign the deed transfer tomorrow morning, and Mom will apologize. Won't you, Mom?"

Beatrice crossed her arms. "I will apologize when she shows respect."

"Get out," I said, my voice echoing in the quiet apartment.

Beatrice laughed, a sharp, ugly sound. "Oh, Evelyn, stay out of this. Maya is my son's wife now. She belongs to our family."

The guest room door clicked open.

Victor stepped into the light. He wasn't wearing his wrinkled shirt anymore. He was wearing a thousand-dollar suit, his silver hair perfectly styled, radiating absolute power.

Beatrice’s smug smile vanished. Liam froze.

"She doesn't belong to anyone," Victor said, his voice dropping the temperature in the room by ten degrees. "But as of 9:00 AM this morning, I own the bank that holds the mortgage to your estate, Beatrice. And I am accelerating the foreclosure."
