Chapter 9 - The Sabotage Attempt

By Friday morning, the tension of the impending legal war had settled into a sharp, focused determination in my mind.

I was leading a massive presentation for Nova Tech’s executive board, outlining the deployment schedule for our new artificial intelligence software.

I was standing at the front of the glass boardroom, clicking through the slides, when the CEO’s executive assistant walked in with a deeply concerned expression.

She whispered something into the CEO’s ear, and the powerful billionaire raised his eyebrows, signaling for me to pause the presentation.

“Maya, we just received a highly disturbing phone call to our corporate HR department regarding your employment history,” the CEO said smoothly.

My heart skipped a single beat, knowing exactly who was desperate and vicious enough to try and ruin my professional reputation.

“The caller identified herself as your sister, Olivia, and she claimed that you fabricated your entire academic record,” he continued, steepling his fingers.

A few of the older board members shifted uncomfortably in their expensive leather chairs, waiting to see how the new, young architect would handle a scandal.

“She also claimed that you stole fifty thousand dollars from your father’s business account to pay for your luxury apartment.”

I took a deep breath, refusing to show a single ounce of panic, and offered the room a calm, completely relaxed smile.

“Gentlemen, my sister is currently dealing with the emotional fallout of discovering her father is facing federal indictment for corporate tax fraud.”

I pulled up a secure folder on the presentation screen, displaying the certified digital copies of my Northwestern transcripts and my unblemished financial background check.

“As you can see from the background audit you already performed, I have no debt, no criminal record, and I certainly didn't fabricate my valedictorian status.”

The CEO looked at the screen, then looked back at me, a slow, impressed smile spreading across his sharp features.

“She also threatened to go to the media if we didn't terminate you immediately,” he added, testing my reaction to public pressure.

“I highly encourage her to do so,” I replied confidently, crossing my arms over my tailored suit jacket.

“A media investigation will only highlight the fact that her husband’s investment firm pulled out of my father’s business because it was built on a pyramid of lies.”

The CEO chuckled, waving his hand dismissively at his assistant to signal that the matter was completely resolved in my favor.

“You have a very messy family, Maya,” the CEO remarked, leaning back in his chair with a look of immense professional respect.

“I do, sir,” I agreed, clicking back to my software presentation, “which is exactly why I learned how to build firewalls that no one can breach.”
