Chapter 10 - The Cease and Desist

The failed attempt to get me fired was the absolute last straw regarding my patience with Olivia and her toxic delusions.
When I finished my board presentation, I walked straight into a private conference room and called my attorney, Mr. Sterling.
“They tried to sabotage my employment at Nova Tech this morning using defamatory statements to my CEO,” I reported briskly.
“I expected they would try something desperate once the IRS froze your father's bank accounts yesterday afternoon,” Mr. Sterling replied with a sharp, professional calm.
“I want a formal cease and desist order drafted and served to Olivia and Julian by the end of the business day.”
“Consider it done, Maya, but we have another, much larger legal development regarding your grandmother’s estate that you need to see immediately.”
An hour later, a private courier arrived at the Nova Tech reception desk, handing me a thick, sealed legal envelope from Mr. Sterling’s office.
I sat at my desk, broke the wax seal, and pulled out a stack of yellowed, notarized documents dating back over seven years.
It was the original, unedited Last Will and Testament of my late grandmother, Margaret, the only person in my family who had truly loved me.
When she passed away during my freshman year of high school, my father told me she had left all her assets to him to manage for the family.
I read the legal phrasing carefully, my eyes scanning the dense paragraphs until I found the specific clause regarding her financial distributions.
“To my youngest granddaughter, Maya, whose brilliant mind will change the world, I leave the entirety of my private mutual funds.”
“These funds are to be placed in an irrevocable trust, accessible to her upon her eighteenth birthday to fund her university education without burden.”
My breath caught in my throat as I looked at the final monetary value of the trust listed at the bottom of the page.
It was over six hundred thousand dollars.
My father hadn't just used my name to commit tax fraud; he had actively stolen my legal inheritance and hidden it from me for years.
He had forced me to work three jobs, take on exhausting freelance coding contracts, and suffer through sleepless nights believing I was penniless.
He did it all to keep me completely subservient and dependent on his emotional abuse, while he secretly spent my grandmother’s money on his failing business and Olivia’s lavish lifestyle.
I didn't cry; the betrayal was far too massive, too profoundly evil for tears.

I picked up a red pen, circled the total amount stolen, and emailed a scanned copy back to Mr. Sterling with a single sentence.
“Take everything he has left.”
