Chapter 8 - The Ambush

On Wednesday evening, I was cooking dinner in my loft, enjoying a glass of red wine and the quiet hum of jazz playing through my speakers.

The legal paperwork was in motion, and Mr. Sterling had assured me that my father’s fraudulent LLC would be frozen by the IRS within days.

Suddenly, a loud, aggressive pounding echoed from my heavy front door, rattling the brass knocker with violent intensity.

I walked over to the security monitor on the wall, checking the hallway camera feed to see who had bypassed the building's front desk.

My father was standing outside my door, his face red and sweaty, pacing back and forth like a trapped animal while holding a manila folder.

I unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open slightly, leaving the heavy steel chain attached so he couldn't force his way inside.

“Let me in, Maya, we need to talk right now,” he demanded, trying to push the door before the steel chain caught tight.

“You have exactly thirty seconds to explain how you got past my doorman before I call the police for trespassing,” I stated coldly.

He glared at me through the crack in the doorway, realizing for the first time that his intimidating physical presence no longer worked on me.

“I need you to sign these documents,” he said, shoving the manila folder aggressively through the gap in the door.

“It’s a standard guarantor form for a commercial loan; the bank just needs a co-signer with a high-income corporate salary to approve the transfer.”

I looked at the folder dangling from his hand, absolutely amazed by the sheer, delusional arrogance of this man.

“You came to my home to demand that I co-sign a loan for a failing company that you ruined with your own incompetence?” I asked slowly.

“You owe me this!” he screamed, his voice echoing loudly down the quiet, luxurious hallway of my building.

“I put a roof over your head for eighteen years, I fed you, I clothed you, and now you are going to save my legacy!”

I didn't take the folder; I simply leaned closer to the gap in the door, staring directly into his desperate, angry eyes.

“I know about the Maya Educational Trust LLC, Dad.”

The color completely drained from his face, his hand dropping to his side as the manila folder slipped from his fingers and scattered across the hallway floor.

“I know you used my name to commit tax fraud, and my lawyer has already forwarded the corporate filings to the federal authorities.”

He staggered backward, his mouth opening and closing silently as the absolute reality of his destruction finally crashed down upon him.

I closed the heavy door, locked the deadbolt, and walked back to my kitchen to finish cooking my dinner in perfect peace.
