Chapter 5 - The Frame Job

With Elena and Derek behind bars, I thought it was over. I was wrong.
The next morning, my firm’s managing partner called me into his office. Two stern-faced men in cheap suits were sitting on his leather couch. FBI.
"We have a warrant for your laptop," one agent said.
"On what grounds?" I asked, my pulse spiking.
"An anonymous tip," the agent replied. "Claiming that you are the primary accountant for the Volkov syndicate, and that Derek Vance was a whistleblower who you attacked to keep quiet."
I almost laughed. It was brilliant, in a sociopathic way. Derek and Elena, knowing they were going down, had reached out to the syndicate. They offered them a scapegoat: me. If the FBI seized my laptop, the syndicate's hackers could remotely plant forged documents implicating me in the money laundering scheme.
I handed over my laptop with a confident smile. "Take it."

The agents looked confused.
"I'm a forensic accountant," I told them. "I anticipated retaliation. That laptop is a honeypot. It's loaded with tracking malware. The moment the syndicate tries to remote-access it to plant evidence, you'll have their IP addresses, server locations, and entire network infrastructure."
