Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Protocol

It was a quiet Tuesday evening. I was sitting at my glass dining table, sipping a hot cup of artisan tea, looking over a legitimate, completely legal corporate merger file.

The lighting in my apartment was warm and inviting. There were no forged documents between me and anyone else. There was no tension, no fear, no impending violence.

I looked down at my wrist. I was wearing a new smart-bracelet, an upgraded model. I traced my finger over the SOS button. I hadn't needed to press it since that night. I hoped I never would again.

But it was a reminder. A reminder that my safety, my success, and my life were entirely in my own hands. I didn't need to co-sign for anyone else's happiness, and I would never apologize for protecting my own.

I took a sip of my tea. It was perfectly warm. I smiled, opened the file, and got back to work.
