Chapter 4 - The Sister's Betrayal

I returned to my apartment to find my front door unlocked.
I didn't go in. I stood in the hallway and called Detective Russo. When the police cleared the apartment, they found Elena sitting on my couch, weeping. My safe was open, and my backup hard drives were smashed on the floor.
"She let me in," Elena sobbed to the officers, playing the victim perfectly. "I just came to apologize! I was so scared of Derek, I didn't know what to do!"
Russo looked at me, raising an eyebrow.
"She's lying," I said, walking past the police. "She came to destroy my evidence."
"Elena," I said, looking down at my sister. "Did you really think I'd keep the primary evidence on a physical hard drive in a shoebox safe? It's on a secure cloud server, mirrored in three different countries."
Elena’s tears vanished. The innocent, terrified sister act dissolved into pure, venomous hatred. "You're ruining my life! If Derek goes to prison, I lose the house! I lose the cars! You have money, you could have just helped us!"
"You watched him try to kill me, Elena."

"He was just trying to scare you!" she screamed.
Russo clamped a hand on Elena’s shoulder. "Elena Vance, you're under arrest for breaking and entering, tampering with evidence, and accessory after the fact to attempted murder."
