Chapter 6 - The Infiltration

The interior of the chateau was disgustingly opulent, filled with stolen artwork and marble statues.
We moved silently down the dimly lit corridors, checking every single room for any sign of Leo.
Suddenly, the blaring sound of an alarm ripped through the silent mansion, accompanied by flashing red lights.
"They found the guards outside," Marcus grunted, raising his assault rifle.
"We are out of time, Evelyn, we have to go loud."
A squad of mercenaries rounded the corner, their flashlights blinding us in the narrow hallway.
Gunfire erupted instantly, deafening inside the stone walls and shattering the priceless crystal chandeliers above us.
I pressed my back against the cold wall, squeezing my eyes shut as bullets tore through the drywall inches from my face.
Marcus returned fire with lethal precision, dropping three men before the others retreated to reload.
"Go!" Marcus yelled over the chaos, tossing a smoke grenade down the hall.
"I will hold them here, you find Leo!"
I didn't hesitate; I sprinted up the grand staircase, my lungs burning as adrenaline flooded my veins.
I kicked open door after door on the second floor, screaming Leo's name until my throat was raw.
Finally, I reached a heavy oak door at the end of the hall that was locked from the outside.
I aimed my pistol at the locking mechanism and pulled the trigger twice, shattering the deadbolt.

I pushed the door open and saw my son standing in the corner, clutching a heavy iron fireplace poker.
When he saw my face, the makeshift weapon dropped from his hands.
