Chapter 5 - The Alps

The biting cold of the Swiss Alps hit my face like a physical blow as we stepped out of the transport van.

Julian’s chateau was a massive structure of stone and glass, perched precariously on the edge of a snow-covered cliff.

Marcus handed me a suppressed pistol, his eyes locking onto mine with deadly seriousness.

"Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to kill, Evelyn," he instructed quietly.

"These men will not hesitate to put a bullet in your head."

I chambered a round, the metallic click sounding impossibly loud in the silent, freezing night.

We approached the outer perimeter fence, avoiding the sweeping beams of the security spotlights.

Marcus expertly disabled the electrical grid for the eastern wing, plunging half the estate into total darkness.

"Move!" he hissed, cutting a hole through the chain-link fence with heavy bolt cutters.

We slipped through the snow, using the thick pine trees as cover until we reached the stone wall of the chateau.

Two armed guards were patrolling the terrace, smoking cigarettes and complaining about the freezing temperature.

Before I could even blink, Marcus stepped out of the shadows and neutralized them both with terrifying efficiency.

We dragged their unconscious bodies into the bushes and breached the side door of the mansion.

I was finally inside the devil's lair.

Now, I just had to find my son.
