Chapter 9 - The Breaking Point

The next day, David took the stand.

He wore a dark suit, sitting tall and composed. As Ms. Reyes guided him through his testimony, he detailed the events of that afternoon. Then, she brought out the box of his childhood records.

"Mr. Sterling, can you explain to the jury how your mother handled your own medical emergencies as a child?"

Margaret’s lawyer objected vehemently, but the judge overruled it, allowing the evidence to establish a pattern of behavior.

David read the report of his ruptured eardrum. He read a report from a broken arm that went untreated for a day.

"My mother uses pain as a weapon," David told the jury, his voice echoing loudly in the quiet room. "If you do not obey her perfectly, she will let you suffer to remind you who is in control. She didn't withhold my son's medication because she thought he was fine. She withheld it because she wanted him to be terrified of her."

Margaret couldn't handle it. The narcissist's ultimate fear is public exposure.

"Liar!" Margaret screamed, jumping up from the defense table, her face purple with rage. "You ungrateful, pathetic little boy! I made you who you are! I should have let you suffer! You and your hysterical wife deserve everything—"

"Order!" the judge bellowed, banging his gavel as the bailiffs rushed forward.

Margaret fought the bailiffs, completely unhinged, screaming obscenities at David. The elegant, country club matriarch had completely vanished, revealing the vicious, out-of-control monster underneath.

The jury stared in absolute horror. The defense rested their case immediately. There was nothing left to defend.
