Chapter 3 - The Golden Child and the Smear Campaign

Margaret made bail the next morning. Her high-priced defense attorney, a slick man named Richard Vance, managed to get her released on a $50,000 bond.

By noon, the smear campaign had begun.

Margaret didn't just play the victim; she weaponized her country club friends and extended family. My phone was flooded with nasty voicemails from David’s relatives. They accused me of being a "neurotic helicopter mom" who was trying to alienate Margaret from her grandchild.

But Margaret’s biggest mistake was underestimating David.

That evening, as we were unpacking Leo's overnight bag, there was a heavy knock on our front door. I opened it to find Margaret standing there, flanked by Richard Vance and David's older brother, Mark—the family's "Golden Child."

"You have five seconds to get off my property," I said, stepping squarely into the doorway.

"Sarah, let's be reasonable adults," Mark said condescendingly, adjusting his expensive tie. "Mom made a slight misjudgment. But having her arrested? It’s going to ruin her standing with the charity board. Drop the charges, and she’ll agree to supervised visits."

"A slight misjudgment?" David’s voice boomed from the hallway. He stepped up beside me, his presence solid and unyielding. "She nearly killed my son, Mark."

Margaret put a hand to her chest, looking at David with fake, tearful eyes. "David, honey, you know I would never hurt Leo! He was just breathing heavily because he was throwing a tantrum! Your wife overreacted, just like she always does!"

"I listened to the 911 tape, Mom," David said, his voice dropping to a lethal quiet. "I heard him gasping in the background while you complained about his 'attitude.' You are a monster."

Margaret’s face morphed from wounded mother to absolute fury. The mask slipped completely. "I raised you! I gave you everything! You owe me respect!"

"I don't owe you a damn thing," David said. He pulled a folded piece of paper from his pocket and shoved it into Mark's chest. "That is a permanent restraining order. It covers me, Sarah, and Leo. If you come within five hundred feet of my family again, the police will drag you away in handcuffs, and this time, there won't be any bail."

He slammed the door in their faces, locking the deadbolt.
