Chapter 7 - Preparing for War

The district attorney, a sharp, empathetic woman named Ms. Reyes, called us into her office to prepare for the criminal trial. Margaret was facing two felony counts of child endangerment and reckless endangerment.
"Margaret’s defense strategy is going to rely on gaslighting the jury," Ms. Reyes explained. "They will argue that Leo's asthma attack wasn't actually severe, and that you, Sarah, are a hysterical, overly anxious mother who blew the situation out of proportion."
"The EMT's report states his oxygen was at 84%," I countered, my blood boiling. "That is critical."
"The EMT will testify," Ms. Reyes assured me. "But we need to establish that Margaret acted with malicious intent, not just ignorance. David, are you prepared to take the stand?"
David nodded, his jaw set in a hard line. "I am going to tell them everything. I'm going to submit my childhood medical records. I am going to prove that she uses medical neglect as a tool for control."
That night, I sat on the edge of Leo's bed. He was reading a comic book, his breathing steady and clear.
"Mom?" he asked, putting the book down. "Is Grandma going to jail?"
"I don't know, buddy," I said honestly, stroking his hair. "But I promise you, she can never, ever hurt you again."

"I'm glad," Leo whispered. "She was scary."
My heart broke, but my resolve turned to steel. Margaret was going to pay for every single ounce of fear she had instilled in my family.
