Chapter 4 - The Escape

Matteo’s eyes narrowed, searching Lorenzo’s expression for any sign of deception.
"She upset you," Matteo noted, feigning sympathy.
"What did the brat whisper to you anyway?"
Lorenzo forced a cold, dead smile onto his face.
"She asked if I had any candy," Lorenzo said smoothly.
"It caught me off guard, that's all."
Matteo relaxed slightly, but his hand rested too close to the gun at his waist.
"Listen, Matteo," Lorenzo said, walking toward the window.
"I need you to handle the guests and clear the estate."
"I am going to take a drive to clear my head."
"Alone?" Matteo asked quickly.
"It isn't safe, Boss."
"I am the boss, Matteo," Lorenzo reminded him, his voice dripping with authority.
"Just do as I say."
As soon as Matteo left to dismiss the guests, Lorenzo moved with lightning speed.
He pulled his encrypted burner phone from a hidden safe and dialed Vincenzo.
"Meet me in the underground garage in two minutes," Lorenzo ordered.
"Bring heavy artillery."
"We are going to Queens."
Lorenzo reopened the panic room and ushered Sophia and Emma out.
"We have to leave now before Matteo realizes what is happening," Lorenzo told them.
He led the terrified mother and child down a secret spiral staircase behind the fireplace.
The tunnel led directly to the subterranean garage.
Vincenzo was already waiting by a bulletproof black SUV, holding an assault rifle.
"Drive," Lorenzo barked as he loaded Sophia and Emma into the back.
The SUV roared to life, its tires screeching against the concrete.
They burst out of the hidden exit just as alarm bells began to ring inside the mansion.
Matteo had figured it out.
Lorenzo looked in the rearview mirror and saw armed men running into the courtyard.
Gunfire erupted, sparking against the reinforced bumper of the SUV.
"Keep your heads down!" Lorenzo shouted over the sound of bullets.

Vincenzo slammed the gas pedal, smashing through the heavy iron gates of the estate.
They were out, but the war had just begun.
