Chapter 1 - The Echo of Four Words

"She has your baby."

Those four words slipped from the three-year-old’s lips like a gentle breeze.

But to Lorenzo DeLuca, they hit with the force of a freight train.

He stopped breathing entirely.

The classical music playing in the background faded into a dull ringing in his ears.

He stared down into Emma’s innocent, wide eyes.

She did not blink, nor did she realize she had just detonated a bomb in the middle of a mafia stronghold.

Behind him, Matteo, his trusted underboss and childhood friend, shifted uncomfortably.

"Boss?" Matteo asked, his voice thick with sudden tension.

"Is everything alright?" Matteo pressed, stepping closer.

Lorenzo did not answer him immediately.

His blood roared in his veins, a violent mixture of disbelief, rage, and a terrifying spark of hope.

He looked up from the little girl and locked eyes with Sophia Rossi across the room.

The housemaid stood frozen by the white carnations.

Her face was ashen, her hands shaking so violently she dropped a silver serving spoon.

The clatter echoed sharply against the marble floor.

Lorenzo knew exactly what guilt looked like.

He had interrogated liars, thieves, and killers for over a decade.

But Sophia did not look like a killer.

She looked like a mother who had just been caught hiding the most dangerous secret in New York.

"Vincenzo," Lorenzo said, his voice deadly quiet but carrying enough authority to freeze the room.

His massive head of security stepped forward instantly.

"Yes, Boss," Vincenzo replied.

"Lock the doors," Lorenzo commanded without turning his head.

"No one leaves this estate until I say so."

Murmurs of panic rippled through the three hundred guests.

Matteo grabbed Lorenzo’s shoulder.

"Lorenzo, what is going on?" Matteo demanded, his grip tight.

Lorenzo smoothly brushed Matteo’s hand away.

"I need a moment alone with the staff," Lorenzo said, his voice laced with venom.

He walked slowly across the marble floor toward Sophia.

The crowd parted for him like the Red Sea.

When he reached the terrified maid, he didn't yell.

He simply leaned in and whispered, "My office. Now."
