Chapter 4 - The Clean Slate

The immediate aftermath of Eleanor’s departure left the kitchen wrapped in a stunned, vibrating silence.
Julian slowly lowered his hands from his face and looked at his two little girls.
They were still clinging tightly to Nora’s apron, their small bodies trembling from the screaming match they had just witnessed.
He had built a billion-dollar empire by analyzing risks and securing assets, yet he had completely failed to secure the emotional safety of his own children.
Julian stood up, smoothed his wrinkled suit jacket, and walked over to the kitchen sink.
He took the damp dishcloth from Nora’s shaking hands and gently tossed it onto the counter.
“You are not taking them upstairs to hide, Nora,” Julian said, his voice finally completely steady.
“This is their home, and they never have to hide in it again.”
He knelt down on the cold marble floor, ignoring the expensive fabric of his trousers, and opened his arms to the twins.
Harper hesitated for a fraction of a second, looking up at Nora for silent permission.
Nora offered a small, encouraging nod, her green eyes shimmering with unshed tears.
Both girls rushed forward, colliding with Julian’s chest in a messy, desperate embrace.
Julian buried his face in their hair, smelling the faint scent of lavender shampoo, and silently swore to never abandon them to a boardroom again.
Later that afternoon, Julian made three decisive phone calls that completely altered the trajectory of his life.
He formally fired the two strict, overbearing evening nannies that Eleanor had insisted upon hiring.
He canceled his upcoming two-week tour of the European tech sectors.
Finally, he called his estate manager and instructed him to legally ban Eleanor Vance from ever entering the gated community.
When Nora walked into the study to bring him a cup of black coffee, Julian asked her to sit down across from his massive mahogany desk.
“I am doubling your salary effective immediately, and I want you to step into the role of household manager,” Julian stated clearly.
Nora immediately shook her head, crossing her arms defensively over her chest.
“I do not want your money, Julian, and I am not looking for a fancy title,” she replied firmly.
“I am here because those little girls need someone who actually stays when things get difficult.”
Julian looked at her calloused hands and realized that all his wealth meant absolutely nothing to a woman of true character.

“I know you don't care about the money, Nora,” Julian answered softly.
“But you deserve to be respected in this house, and I am going to make sure that happens from now on.”
