Chapter 2 - The Uninvited Guest

For the next hour, Julian did not check his phone a single time.
The expensive device sat ignored on the counter, buzzing constantly with urgent messages from his executive board.
He ate the rest of the muffin in silence, savoring the rare feeling of peace.
He asked Harper about her upcoming art project at the charter school and actually listened without interrupting her.
Nora moved quietly and efficiently around the kitchen, cleaning up the baking supplies.
She was clearly on edge, her shoulders tense, waiting for the inevitable other shoe to drop.
In her vast experience working for the ultra-wealthy, moments of kindness were usually followed by swift, brutal demands.
Just as the girls were finishing the last drops of their milk, the heavy oak front door clicked open loudly.
The sharp, rhythmic tapping of designer stiletto heels echoed aggressively through the limestone foyer.
“Julian?” Eleanor’s musical, commanding voice called out, piercing the fragile sanctuary of the kitchen.
“I know you’re already gone, darling, but I left my silk scarf in the study!”
Julian’s blood instantly ran ice cold in his veins.
The relaxed posture he had just managed to find completely vanished.
Eleanor strode confidently into the kitchen, freezing the absolute moment she saw the domestic scene unfolding before her.
Her perfectly painted crimson lips parted in genuine shock.
She took in the sight of Julian, sitting comfortably in his tailored suit, directly next to the hired help.
“Julian,” she recovered with frightening speed, flashing a tight, plastic smile that didn't reach her eyes.
“What on earth are you doing here, darling?”
“I thought you were supposedly saving the tech world in Seattle today.”
“There was a change of plans, Eleanor,” Julian said, his voice entirely devoid of its usual warmth and admiration.
Eleanor’s sharp eyes darted immediately to Nora, her gaze hardening into something deeply cruel and calculating.
She despised Nora with a passion that went far beyond mere classism.
Nora represented the genuine love and maternal warmth that Eleanor was entirely incapable of faking.
“Well, since you’re unexpectedly here,” Eleanor said, stepping further into the room and crossing her arms.
“Perhaps we should finally handle that administrative task we discussed over espresso this morning.”
She meant firing Nora.
She intended to do it right here, right now, in front of the frightened children.
Nora immediately stepped back, her hands trembling violently as she grabbed a damp dishcloth.
“I’ll just… take the girls upstairs so they can get dressed for school,” Nora whispered, desperately trying to shield the twins from the incoming storm.
“Nonsense,” Eleanor snapped viciously, dropping her heavy designer bag onto the pristine counter.
“The girls are more than old enough to understand when household staff needs to be transitioned, Nora.”
Mia let out a soft whimper, pressing her face tightly against Julian’s arm for protection.
That small, terrified sound from his daughter acted like a spark to gasoline.

It ignited a protective, violent fury inside Julian that he hadn't felt since before the tragic accident.
He realized in that fleeting moment how utterly blind he had been.
