Chapter 1 - The Escape

The metallic taste of copper heavily filled my mouth as I stared at the three strangers I used to call my family.

My mother stood there with her arms crossed, holding my cell phone hostage in her perfectly manicured, trembling hands.

Jason was still smirking arrogantly, adjusting his expensive watch as if he had just swatted a minor, incredibly annoying fly.

Arthur remained entirely transfixed by the glowing television screen, completely ignoring the fresh blood aggressively pooling on his expensive hardwood floor.

I slowly pushed myself up onto my hands and knees, my head violently spinning with a sickening, terrifying wave of nausea.

The sharp, agonizing pain in my shattered jaw radiated aggressively through my entire skull with every single racing heartbeat.

"Give me my phone right now, Margaret," I demanded fiercely, refusing to ever call her 'Mom' again in this lifetime.

She rolled her eyes incredibly dramatically, sighing deeply as if my severe physical injury was just a massive inconvenience to her evening.

"You can have it back when you calm down and apologize to your brother for completely ruining Thanksgiving," she scolded coldly.

I didn't argue with her, I didn't shed a single tear, and I absolutely didn't wait for her to hand it over willingly.

I lunged forward with a sudden, massive burst of adrenaline, snatching the device right out of her loose, careless grip.

Margaret gasped out loud in pure shock, stepping back as if my sudden defiance was the most deeply offensive thing she had ever witnessed.

Jason immediately stepped forward to completely block the hallway, his large, intimidating frame violently cutting off my path to the front door.

"Where exactly do you think you're going, little sister?" he taunted cruelly, cracking his knuckles with a sickening, hollow pop.

I reached deep into my coat pocket, my trembling fingers wrapping tightly around the cold, heavy metal of my pepper spray keychain.

I raised my hand and aggressively sprayed a thick, blinding stream directly into his arrogant, smirking eyes without a single moment of hesitation.

Jason let out a deafening, horrifying scream of agony, violently dropping to his knees as he clawed desperately at his burning face.

"What the hell is completely wrong with you, Sarah?!" my mother shrieked hysterically, desperately rushing to her golden boy's side to help him.

My father finally looked away from his stupid football game, his face violently turning an ugly shade of purple with sudden, explosive rage.

I absolutely didn't stay long enough to hear his inevitable, useless, and toxic threats echo through the quiet house.

I ripped the heavy front door open and sprinted out into the freezing November air, the cold wind biting fiercely at my swollen face.

I jumped into my car, securely locked the doors instantly, and aggressively slammed my foot onto the gas pedal with absolutely everything I had.

I was leaving that completely toxic nightmare behind forever, but my ultimate, devastating revenge against them was only just beginning.
