Chapter 8 - The Sentencing

The massive federal courthouse in downtown Los Angeles was swarming with aggressive reporters and flashing cameras.

Julian Ashford walked confidently up the concrete steps, ignoring the chaotic shouting of the intrusive press.

He wore a sharply tailored, pitch-black suit, radiating an aura of absolutely untouchable power.

Inside the packed courtroom, Cordelia Vance sat rigidly at the defense table, looking significantly older and completely defeated.

Her expensive designer clothes had been replaced by a drab, poorly fitting gray blazer.

The judge, a stern man with zero tolerance for the abuse of vulnerable children, slammed his heavy wooden gavel.

"Does the prosecution have any final witnesses for the sentencing phase?" the judge asked loudly.

"We call Mr. Julian Ashford to deliver a victim impact statement," the lead prosecutor announced clearly.

Julian walked slowly to the wooden podium, locking his dark, furious eyes completely onto Cordelia.

The disgraced housekeeper actually shuddered, desperately looking down at her shaking hands to avoid his terrifying gaze.

"For an entire year, I entrusted this woman with the most valuable, precious things in my entire life," Julian began, his voice echoing in the silent room.

"I paid her an absolute fortune to ensure they were safe, happy, and perfectly healthy."

He gripped the edges of the wooden podium so tightly that his large knuckles turned stark white.

"Instead, she deliberately locked them in a room and forced them to endure agonizing starvation while she lined her own pockets with stolen money."

A collective, horrified gasp rippled through the crowded gallery of the large courtroom.

"She exploited a grieving father and tortured two innocent, defenseless little girls simply for greed."

Julian stood incredibly tall, projecting his immense strength for everyone in the room to witness.

"I am asking this court to ensure that Cordelia Vance never has the opportunity to harm another living soul ever again."

The judge slowly nodded his head, visibly moved by the raw, undeniable pain in the billionaire's heavy words.

"Stand up, Miss Vance," the judge ordered sharply, showing absolutely no mercy in his tone.

Cordelia slowly rose to her feet, her legs violently trembling beneath her.

"For the appalling crimes of grand larceny, fraud, and severe child endangerment, I sentence you to exactly fifteen years in federal prison."

Cordelia completely collapsed into her chair, sobbing hysterically as the heavy bailiffs moved in to aggressively handcuff her.

Julian turned around and walked out of the courtroom, finally leaving the darkness of the past firmly behind him.
