Chapter 3 - The Unlikely Guest

The sprawling Ashford mansion felt completely different without the oppressive presence of Cordelia Vance.

Julian led Eleanor through the massive front doors, completely ignoring the shocked expressions of his remaining security staff.

Eleanor hesitated on the threshold, terrified of leaving mud on the pristine, imported marble floors.

"Please, come inside," Julian insisted, gently guiding her by the elbow.

He immediately summoned the head housekeeper, a kind, elderly woman named Maria who had been sidelined by Cordelia.

"Maria, please prepare the east wing guest suite and draw a hot bath," Julian instructed smoothly.

"And find some warm, comfortable clothes for our very important guest."

Eleanor looked around the massive foyer, her eyes wide with overwhelming awe and deep intimidation.

An hour later, Eleanor emerged from the guest suite looking like a completely different person.

Her gray hair was washed and neatly brushed, and she wore a soft cashmere sweater and comfortable trousers.

Despite the luxurious clothing, she still looked incredibly fragile and deeply nervous.

Julian met her in the massive gourmet kitchen, where he was personally trying to prepare lunch.

He had dismissed all the private chefs for the day, determined to feed his children with his own hands.

"I am not very good at this," Julian admitted, staring helplessly at a burning pan of scrambled eggs.

Eleanor offered a tiny, shy smile and gently stepped beside him to take the spatula from his hand.

"You have the heat way too high, Mister Ashford," she murmured, expertly lowering the flame and rescuing the meal.

Just then, the sound of tiny, hesitant footsteps echoed down the grand hallway.

Ivy and Maeve peeked around the massive doorframe, clutching each other tightly.

They looked incredibly small, their huge eyes scanning the room for the terrifying lady in black.

When Ivy saw the gray-haired woman standing by the stove, her entire face lit up like the morning sun.

"Soup lady!" Ivy squealed, releasing her sister's hand and running across the massive kitchen.

Eleanor immediately dropped to her knees, opening her arms wide to catch the running toddler.

Ivy crashed into her embrace, burying her small face in Eleanor's soft, clean sweater.

Maeve quickly followed, waddling over to join the desperate, emotional hug.

Julian stood back and watched the beautiful scene unfold, his throat incredibly tight with suppressed tears.

His daughters had not hugged him like that since the terrible morning his beloved wife Margot had died.

Eleanor looked up at Julian over the girls' tiny heads, her eyes shining with absolute, pure joy.

In that profound moment, Julian finally understood that his massive fortress was completely useless without actual love inside it.

He swore right then and there that he would completely tear down the invisible walls he had built.
