Chapter 7 - Papers Served

I hired a ruthless family lawyer using my new executive bonus. By Friday, both my mother and Liam were served with Cease and Desist letters, accompanied by a very clear warning that any further contact, direct or indirect, would result in immediate legal action for harassment and filing false reports to child services.

According to Eleanor, who still kept tabs on the family drama through her own networks, the delivery of those papers caused a nuclear explosion.

My mother realized, terrifyingly and suddenly, that she had completely lost her punching bag. Without me there to absorb her toxicity, she turned it on the only targets left: Liam and Vanessa.

She moved in with them after she couldn't afford her own rent, claiming it was temporary. The three of them were trapped in a cramped, heavily mortgaged condo—three miserable, bitter people, blaming each other for their ruined reputations and empty bank accounts. It was a poetic, self-inflicted prison.
