Chapter 2 - The Digital Wildfire

By Tuesday morning, I had already blocked Liam, my mother, and Vanessa on every platform. I was focused on getting Leo to school and making it to my shift at the accounting firm. I thought the nightmare was over. I was wrong.
It started with a text from my best friend, Sarah: Are you seeing this???
Attached was a TikTok link. I clicked it. There was Vanessa, in all her white-lace glory, sneering about the "tragic single mom." There was my mother’s cruel "clearance item" joke. And there, in high definition, was my brave eight-year-old son marching up to the stage.
The video had 4.5 million views.
Someone from the groom's side—likely one of Liam's college friends who had been filming the speeches—had uploaded it. The internet had done the rest. The comments were a bloodbath.
“Who invites someone to a wedding just to bully them? Trash bride.” “The grandmother is pure evil. Protect that little boy at all costs!” “Did the groom just sit there? DIVORCE HIM.”
My stomach dropped. I hadn’t wanted this to be public. But as I read the comments, a strange sense of validation washed over me. For thirty years, my mother had gaslighted me into thinking I was overly sensitive. For thirty years, Liam had enabled it. Now, millions of strangers were seeing exactly what I had lived through.

My phone rang. It was an unknown number, but the area code was local. I answered cautiously.
"Clara?" a sharp, authoritative voice asked. "This is Eleanor Vance. Vanessa's aunt. We need to talk."
