Chapter 1 - The Echo of the Microphone

The microphone hit the stage floor with a loud, electronic screech that made half the room flinch. Leo didn't wait for a reaction. He turned his back on the bride, walked down the three carpeted steps, and marched right back to my side.
For three agonizing seconds, the banquet hall was a tomb. No one breathed. No one moved. The clinking of silverware had completely stopped.
I looked at my mother. The smug, wine-stained smirk had frozen on her face, slowly melting into a mask of humiliated rage. I looked at my brother, Liam. He was no longer staring at his whiskey; he was staring at his new wife, who looked like she had just been slapped across the face with a wet towel.
The spell broke when Vanessa let out a shrill, nervous laugh. “Well! Kids say the darnedest things, right?” she chirped into the dead air.
No one laughed. A few guests at the back tables averted their eyes, thoroughly disgusted.
The heat in my cheeks vanished, replaced by an ice-cold clarity I had never felt before. I stood up. I didn’t rush, and I didn’t tremble. I picked up my purse, grabbed Leo’s small, warm hand, and looked directly at the head table.
“You’re right, Mom,” I said, my voice carrying through the silent room without a microphone. “Nobody wants the trouble. And I’m done dealing with yours.”

I turned on my heel and walked out. Liam finally found his legs. “Clara, wait! Come on, don't make a scene!” he called out, jogging down the aisle.
I didn't stop. I pushed through the heavy double doors into the cool night air, Leo's hand tightly enveloped in mine. For the first time in my life, I wasn't crying over my family's cruelty. I was free.
