Chapter 4 - The Knock on the Door

That evening, a frantic pounding echoed through my modest apartment. I looked through the peephole. It was Liam and my mother. I cracked the door, keeping the chain locked.

"Take it down!" my mother shrieked immediately, her face red and puffy. "Take that damn video down right now, Clara! I am being harassed at the grocery store! My book club kicked me out!"

"I didn't post it, Mom. And I can't take it down."

Liam looked exhausted, his tie undone, dark circles under his eyes. "Clara, please. Vanessa won't stop crying. She got suspended from her marketing job today. People are leaving one-star reviews on her company's page. Just make a public statement. Say it was an inside joke. Say we’re a loving family."

I stared at my brother. The boy I had protected from our father's temper, the boy whose scraped knees I had bandaged.

"An inside joke?" I asked softly. "You want me to tell the world that humiliating my son was a joke to protect the woman who did it?"

"She's my wife, Clara! You have to help us!"

"You're a dented can, Liam," I whispered, throwing her words back. "And Vanessa bought you. Have a nice life."

I slammed the door and slid the deadbolt into place.
