Chapter 7 - The Tahoe Trap

Robert marched through the opulent living room, his eyes darting around at the wealth he thought he was about to tap into. He wore a cheap tuxedo, and Evelyn looked completely out of place in a dated sequence gown.
“Where’s the lawyer?” Robert demanded when he cornered me near the grand staircase. “Let’s get this settlement signed so I can get out of this freezing mountain town.”
“Patience, Robert,” I smiled, holding my champagne flute. “It’s time for my speech.”
I walked up the staircase, tapping a silver spoon against my glass. The room fell silent. The cameras from the local press turned toward me.
“Thank you all for coming tonight,” I projected my voice clearly. “We are here to support victims of financial and emotional abuse. It is a cause very close to my heart, as many of you have recently read in the papers.”
I gestured to the massive projector screen that had been set up behind me.
“My husband recently claimed to the press that I was a vindictive woman who ruined him over a misunderstanding. I believe in transparency. So, let’s clear up that misunderstanding.”
I clicked a remote. The screen lit up.
It wasn't a spreadsheet. It was a video. A security camera video from the lobby of Chloe’s luxury apartment building, showing Robert handing her a diamond tennis bracelet that had gone missing from my jewelry box two years ago.
The crowd gasped.
I clicked again. It was a recorded audio call between Evelyn and her loan shark, where she explicitly said, “Don't worry, my idiot son is selling his wife's house while she’s at a funeral. You’ll have your money by Friday.”

The silence in the room was absolute. Robert and Evelyn stood frozen in the center of the crowd, completely surrounded by the city's elite, their reputations disintegrating into ash in real-time.
“There will be no settlement,” I announced, looking dead into Robert’s terrified eyes. “But I hope you enjoy the appetizers on your way out.”
