Chapter 2 - The Letter and the Liar

I sat at my kitchen island, the silence of the empty house wrapping around me like a comforting blanket. Outside, Robert and Evelyn had sped off in his leased BMW, their grand plan completely detonated.

I looked down at the sealed envelope Arthur had handed me. My thumb traced the wax seal before I broke it. Inside was a letter, written in my grandmother’s unmistakable, elegant script.

My Dearest Clara,

If you are reading this, it means Robert has shown his true colors, and my lawyers have intercepted his pathetic attempt to steal your home. I am deeply sorry that you have to endure this betrayal, but I raised a warrior, not a victim.

For the last year, my private investigators have been watching him. Robert hasn't just been a bad husband; he has been bleeding your joint accounts dry to fund his mother’s gambling debts and his own indiscretions. Yes, my darling, there is another woman. Her name is Chloe, and she is a twenty-four-year-old receptionist at his accounting firm.

I knew you would never believe it without proof, so I built you a fortress instead. The ten million dollars is yours, free and clear, hidden in offshore accounts his grubby little hands can never touch. The Tahoe compound is ready for you. Go there. Heal. And then, destroy them.

Love always, Gran.

Tears pricked my eyes, but they weren't tears of sorrow. They were tears of profound, overwhelming gratitude. My grandmother had orchestrated my salvation from her deathbed.

I grabbed my keys and drove to the storage facility Evelyn had mentioned. When I rolled up the metal door, I expected to see my clothes and heirlooms. Instead, I found a disorganized mountain of trash bags. They hadn't even bothered to pack my things properly. They had shoved my life into garbage bags like I was refuse.

At the bottom of the pile, I found Robert’s old laptop—the one he thought he had thrown away months ago. A cold smile crept onto my face. If Gran’s investigators found Chloe, who knew what else was on this hard drive? The game wasn't just about defending my assets anymore. It was about absolute ruin.
