Chapter 4 - The Sinking Ship

Back in the city, Robert’s life was unraveling at breakneck speed.

Without the influx of cash from the house sale, his mother’s creditors had come calling. Evelyn had racked up over $300,000 in underground casino debts. Robert’s accounting firm, alerted to his suspicious activity by an anonymous tip (courtesy of Arthur Sterling), placed him on unpaid administrative leave pending a forensic audit.

My phone buzzed constantly with texts from him.

Clara, please. I was confused. My mother pressured me.

Clara, I can't access our checking account. Did you freeze it?

Clara, Chloe means nothing to me! She was a mistake!

I didn't answer a single one. Silence is the most terrifying sound to a narcissist losing control.

Instead, I focused on the upcoming preliminary divorce hearing. Robert had hired a bargain-bin lawyer, hoping he could strong-arm me into a settlement by threatening to drag my name through the mud in court. He still thought I was the quiet, compliant wife who avoided conflict at all costs.

He didn't realize the woman he married died on that porch.

On a Tuesday morning, Jack drove me to the courthouse in a sleek, armored SUV my grandmother had kept in the Tahoe garage. I wore a tailored, crimson power suit and a diamond necklace Gran had left me. I looked like a ten-million-dollar heiress.

When Robert saw me walking down the courthouse hallway, flanked by Jack and Victoria, his jaw practically unhinged. He looked disheveled, the stress carving deep lines into his face. Evelyn was beside him, looking frantic and haggard.

“Clara!” Evelyn hissed, lunging forward. “You have to stop this! They’re going to take my condo!”

Jack stepped smoothly between us, his massive frame easily blocking her path. “Back away, ma’am.”

I didn't even break my stride as I walked past them into the courtroom.
