Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

The morning sun crept over the horizon, painting the city in shades of pink and gold.
Vincent returned to his mansion just as the police sirens began wailing in the far distance.
His men were already cleaning up the wreckage, hauling away the debris and scrubbing the marble floors.
Vincent walked slowly, his body aching and his dark suit torn and ruined.
He bypassed the kitchen and walked straight down to the wine cellar.
He punched the security code into the keypad, and the heavy steel door of the panic room hissed open.
Carmen was sitting on the floor, holding Isabella, who had fallen asleep against her chest.
When the door opened, Carmen flinched, looking up with wide, terrified eyes.
But when she saw Vincent standing there, alive and victorious, a massive sob of relief tore from her throat.
"It is over," Vincent said softly, leaning against the doorframe in utter exhaustion.
"Don Carlo is dead, and the Moretti family is completely finished."
Carmen gently laid the sleeping child on a blanket and stood up.
She ran across the small room and threw her arms around Vincent’s neck, hugging him desperately.
Vincent dropped his weapon, wrapping his strong arms around her waist and holding her tight.
He buried his face in her dark hair, breathing in the scent of vanilla and absolute safety.
"You are bleeding," Carmen whispered, pulling back to examine a deep cut on his shoulder.
"It is just a scratch," Vincent assured her, but he grimaced when she touched it.
"Come upstairs, let me take care of you," she insisted gently.
Upstairs, the mansion was quiet again, the chaos of the night finally settled.
Carmen led Vincent into his massive master bathroom, grabbing the first aid kit from the cabinet.
Vincent took off his ruined jacket and unbuttoned his shirt, revealing a torso covered in old scars.
Carmen did not flinch or look away from his violent history.
She carefully cleaned the wound on his shoulder, her touch incredibly soft and tender.
"Why did you risk everything for us?" she asked quietly, taping a bandage over the cut.
Vincent looked at her through the massive mirror, his dark eyes intense and honest.
"Because for thirty years, I have built an empire of fear," he confessed softly.
"But when I saw Isabella hiding in that pantry, I realized I wanted to build something completely different."
He turned around, capturing her small hand in his large, calloused one.

"I want to build a family, Carmen."
Carmen’s breath hitched, tears springing to her beautiful eyes as she looked at him.
