Chapter 9 - The Final Lockout

A year passed.
Derek was convicted of wire fraud and sentenced to four years in a federal penitentiary.
Chloe avoided jail time by cooperating, but her life was in ruins. She was drowning in legal debt, ostracized by everyone she knew, and working double shifts just to keep the lights on in her miserable apartment.
On Thanksgiving Day, Mary and I were in the kitchen preparing a massive turkey. We had invited Arthur, Sheriff Miller, and a few neighbors who had supported us through the nightmare. The house was warm, filled with laughter and the smell of roasting vegetables.
The doorbell rang.
I looked at the security camera monitor. It was Chloe.
She looked ten years older. The arrogant, entitled girl was gone, replaced by a hollow, exhausted woman. She held a small, pathetic pumpkin pie in a plastic container.
Mary walked up beside me and looked at the screen.
"She has nowhere else to go," Mary whispered, a profound sadness in her voice.
"I know," I said. "But forgiveness doesn't mean she gets her key back."
I walked to the front door and opened it, keeping the heavy chain locked.
"Dad," Chloe sobbed, shivering in the cold. "Please. I have nobody. I’m so sorry. I’m so, so sorry. Just let me come in for dinner. Please."
I looked at her. I didn't feel anger anymore. I just felt a quiet, resolute peace.

"I forgive you, Chloe," I said softly. "And your mother forgives you. But you broke this family. And some things can't be rebuilt."
I gently closed the door, sliding the heavy deadbolt into place.
