Chapter 10 - New Foundations

That evening, surrounded by good friends and genuine warmth, Mary and I felt a weight lift off our shoulders that we hadn't even realized we were carrying.
After dinner, Arthur pulled me aside into my study.
"I brought the final paperwork, Robert," Arthur said, pulling a thick envelope from his briefcase. "Are you sure about this?"
"I’ve never been more sure of anything," I replied, taking the pen.
Mary walked in and stood beside me, resting her hand on my shoulder. Together, we signed the new will and trust.
We didn't leave our estate to Chloe. We didn't leave it to any distant relatives.
We established the Mary & Robert Foundation. Upon our passing, the house would be sold, and every single penny of our wealth would be donated to a local charity that provided emergency housing and legal support for elderly victims of financial abuse.

We had built this house with our own hands. We had defended it with our own strength. And when the time finally came, it wouldn't be a monument to greed. It would be a shield for those who needed it most.
I looked at Mary, kissing her softly on the forehead. The nightmare was over. The locks were changed. And for the rest of our days, the only people stepping through our gate would be the ones who truly knew the meaning of family.
