Chapter 4 - The Repo Man

I wasn't done. Cutting them off was just the beginning. I needed to take back every piece of luxury they had funded with my hard work.

Years ago, when Derek supposedly "started his own firm," I co-signed the lease on his luxury downtown office space. I also bought Chloe a fifty-thousand-dollar SUV as a wedding present, under the condition they pay the insurance. They hadn't paid a dime in two years. I had been quietly covering it to keep her out of trouble.

Not anymore.

On Thursday afternoon, I drove my tow truck down to Chloe’s upscale suburban neighborhood. I pulled up right into their driveway.

Chloe came running out of the front door in her pajamas, looking frantic. "Dad! What are you doing?!"

"Taking back my property," I said, hooking the winch to the front axle of the gleaming white SUV.

"You can't take my car! How am I supposed to get to work?!"

"You don't work, Chloe," I reminded her, operating the hydraulics to lift the vehicle. "You spend my money. The title is in my name. And since you breached the verbal contract on the insurance, I’m repossessing it."

Derek came out next, his face flushed red with rage. "You old fool! Put the car down! I’ll call the cops!"

"Call them," I challenged, tossing a manila envelope at his feet. "Inside is the eviction notice from your commercial landlord. I pulled my name off your office lease this morning. You have forty-eight hours to clear your desk before they change the locks. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?"

Derek looked at the envelope as if it were a venomous snake. His arrogant facade completely crumbled.
