Chapter 9 - The Ashes of the Empire

When the heavy steel door finally hissed open, the sun was rising.

Julian stood in the doorway.

He was battered, bleeding from a cut on his forehead, his suit torn to shreds. But he was standing.

Behind him, the estate was a ruin of shattered glass and bullet holes, but the silence meant only one thing. The Morettis were gone. The war was over.

I ran to him, throwing myself into his arms. He buried his face in my neck, inhaling my scent like a drowning man taking his first breath of air.

"It's over," he rasped, his voice raw. "Lorenzo is dead. The syndicate is mine. No one will ever threaten us again."

We sat on the front steps of the ruined mansion as the paramedics tended to his men. I rested my head on his good shoulder, Leo cooing happily in my arms.

"What happens now?" I asked quietly.

Julian looked at me, the hardness in his eyes completely gone, replaced by a profound, weary peace.

"I legitimize," he said. "I take the money and I buy real estate. Legal businesses. I step out of the shadows. I won't raise my son in a warzone. And I won't put my wife through another night like this."

My heart skipped a beat. "Your wife?"

Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out a simple, flawless diamond ring. He didn't ask. He just slid it onto my finger, his eyes locking onto mine with that terrifying, beautiful intensity.

"You were mine the second you fed my son on that plane, Clara. You just finally realized it."

I looked at the ring, then at the man who had stolen me, saved me, and given me a family when I thought my life was over.

"Yes," I whispered, kissing him. "I'm yours."
