Chapter 10 - A New Dawn (Conclusion)

Three years later.
The heavy, suffocating darkness of my past felt like a lifetime away.
I stood on the balcony of our new estate in Tuscany, Italy, sipping espresso. The morning sun bathed the rolling vineyards in golden light. We had left the American underworld behind. Julian had kept his promise; his empire was completely legitimate now, a sprawling network of shipping and real estate that operated purely in the light.
"Mama!"
I turned around. Three-year-old Leo came running through the French doors, his dark hair a messy mop, his brown eyes bright with joy. He crashed into my legs, laughing.
"Good morning, my sweet boy," I smiled, scooping him up and kissing his cheek.
Right behind him walked Julian. The scars of his past were still there, hidden beneath a crisp white linen shirt, but the dangerous mob boss had been replaced by a fiercely devoted father.
He walked up behind me, wrapping his strong arms around my waist, resting his chin on my shoulder as we looked out over our land.
"He's getting too fast for me," Julian chuckled, kissing my temple.
"You're just getting old, old man," I teased, leaning back into his solid chest.
Julian smiled, his hand sliding down to rest gently on my swollen belly. I was six months pregnant with our second child. A little girl.
"I've never felt younger," Julian murmured, his voice thick with emotion. He turned me around, looking at me with the same intense devotion he had shown me on that terrifying flight years ago.
I had boarded that plane as a ghost, a grieving mother ready to fade away into nothing. I was taken prisoner by a monster. But in the darkness of his world, we had found each other. We had stitched each other's wounds, fought through the fire, and built an empire of our own.

Not an empire of blood or fear. But an empire of love, fierce and unbreakable.
Julian kissed me gently under the Tuscan sun, and for the first time in my life, I knew exactly where I belonged. I was finally, truly, home.
