Chapter 3 - Blood on the Marble

The illusion of safety shattered on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.
I was in the estate's massive library, reading a book while Leo slept in a carrier strapped to my chest. Julian was in his study down the hall.
Suddenly, the deafening crack of sniper fire shattered the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Glass exploded inward like shrapnel. I screamed, spinning around to shield Leo with my own body, throwing myself behind a heavy mahogany desk.
The alarm systems blared. Boots pounded against the marble floors. Gunfire erupted from the hallways, deafening and chaotic. The Morettis had breached the perimeter.
"Clara!"
Julian burst into the library. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket; his white shirt was stained with blood, and he was holding a customized Glock.
"Are you hit?" he demanded, sliding behind the desk with me.
"No! Leo is safe!" I sobbed, clutching the terrified, crying baby.
"Stay down," Julian commanded.
Three men dressed in tactical gear breached the library doors. Julian didn't hesitate. He moved with lethal, terrifying precision, firing three shots. The men dropped instantly.
But a fourth man appeared on the balcony. He leveled his weapon at me.
Julian threw his massive body over mine just as the gun went off.
Julian grunted, a sickening sound of impact echoing through the room. But he didn't stop. He raised his arm and fired, taking the sniper out.
The house went dead silent, save for the blaring alarms and Leo's wails.
I looked up. Julian was pale, clutching his shoulder, blood seeping through his fingers.

"You're shot," I gasped, panic gripping my throat.
He looked down at me, his eyes softening despite the agony. "You're safe. That's all that matters."
