Chapter 2 - Ghosts in the Nursery

For the first week, I lived in a blur of survival and grief.

I learned the baby’s name was Leo.

Every time I nursed him, my heart shattered and healed all over again. He had Julian’s dark hair but innocent, wide brown eyes. Holding him brought back the agonizing memories of my own lost daughter, but it also brought a strange, undeniable comfort.

I wasn't just feeding him; he was anchoring me to the earth.

Julian visited every evening at exactly 8:00 PM. He would sit in a velvet armchair in the corner of my room, drinking scotch, simply watching us. He rarely spoke. He just watched me hold his son with an intensity that made my skin prickle.

One night, the silence was too heavy to bear.

"Who killed her?" I asked, looking up from Leo’s sleeping face. "His mother."

Julian’s jaw tightened. "The Moretti family. A rival syndicate. They wanted to send a message. They missed me and hit her."

"Did you love her?" The question slipped out before I could stop it.

Julian’s dark eyes locked onto mine. "It was an arrangement. But she was the mother of my heir. In my world, that makes her sacred." He leaned forward, the ice in his glass clinking. "You are keeping him alive, Clara. That makes you sacred, too."

A shiver ran down my spine. It wasn’t a threat. It was a vow.

"I lost a baby, too," I whispered, the confession tearing out of my throat. "And my fiancé. A drunk driver. Four months ago."

Julian stopped drinking. The dangerous mobster faded, leaving only a man who understood the language of absolute devastation.

"I know," Julian said softly. "I read your file. I know exactly what was taken from you."

He stood up, walked over, and gently brushed a strand of hair behind my ear. His touch was shockingly warm.

"They won't take this one from you, Clara. I swear it on my life."
