Chapter 1 - The Lockdown

"Secure the exits."

Julian’s command did not echo, yet it reached the heavy oak doors at the far end of the grand hall faster than a gunshot. Two security men in dark suits stepped seamlessly in front of the brass handles. The subtle click of the deadbolts locking sounded like a judge's gavel in the breathless room.

Eleanor’s face drained of its carefully applied color, leaving her looking hollow and frantic. "Julian! You cannot possibly be entertaining this... this delusion! She is a maid! You are humiliating me!"

"I am securing the truth," Julian replied, his voice a glacial flatline. He didn't look at Eleanor; his piercing gaze was locked onto his head of security, a hulking man named Marcus. "Marcus. Go to the master suite. The large wardrobe. Bring me the blue bird hatbox."

"Yes, Mr. Vance."

"Julian, stop this!" Eleanor lunged forward, her diamond-clad fingers clawing at his sleeve. "It’s a lie! She planted it! This woman has been trying to sabotage us because she wants you for herself!"

I pulled Lily tighter against my apron, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. The elite crowd began to murmur, the whispers sharp and venomous. The maid? A fake pregnancy?

Time stretched into an agonizing eternity. I felt the weight of four hundred judging eyes burning into my skin. I was a nobody, a ghost who scrubbed their floors, daring to strike down a titan of their world. But as I looked at Julian’s broad, unmoving back, I realized he wasn't standing like a man who had been betrayed. He was standing like a predator who had finally cornered its prey.

Five minutes later, Marcus reappeared at the top of the grand staircase. In his massive hands rested a vintage, round box painted with delicate blue birds.

Eleanor let out a jagged, hysterical sob.

Julian took the box from Marcus. He didn't rush. He set it gently on a silver catering table, pushing aside a tray of champagne flutes. With maddening precision, he lifted the lid.

Inside, nestled in layers of tissue paper, was a silicone maternity prosthetic. It was flawlessly crafted, designed to mimic a four-month pregnancy. Beneath it lay a folded invoice.

Julian picked up the paper, scanning it. When he finally looked up, his eyes were devoid of anything human.

"Custom order. Billed to your father’s shell corporation," Julian read aloud, his voice projecting flawlessly across the dead-silent hall. "Tell me, Eleanor. Was the plan to stage a tragic miscarriage after the wedding? Or were you going to buy an infant on the black market?"

May you like

Eleanor collapsed to her knees, weeping into her emerald velvet gown. The room erupted into chaos.

Julian turned his back on his ruined fiancé. He looked down at me, and for a fleeting second, the ice in his eyes melted. "Come with me," he said softly.
