Chapter 9 - The Final Verdict

Six months later, a judge slammed his heavy wooden gavel, making the divorce absolute and final.

The judge, having reviewed the overwhelming evidence of financial abuse and infidelity, ruled entirely in my favor.

I was granted sole ownership of the estate, the culinary institutes, and all corporate holding accounts.

Marcus was ordered to assume the entirety of the massive credit card debt he had accumulated trying to impress Chloe.

Because he was unemployed and legally bankrupt, his wages from whatever menial job he eventually found would be heavily garnished to repay the restitution he owed me.

Eleanor didn't escape the fallout, either.

Because Marcus could no longer afford to help her pay the mortgage on her oversized house, the bank foreclosed on the property.

Eleanor was forced to move into a tiny, rundown apartment on the outskirts of the city.

Her country club friends, having heard the scandalous rumors of the "spa room incident" and the stolen jewelry, completely ostracized her.

She went from being a respected socialite to an absolute pariah, drinking cheap wine alone in a dark living room, entirely forgotten by the elite circle she worshipped.

I stood on the steps of the courthouse on the day the verdict was finalized.

The crisp autumn wind blew through my hair, carrying away the last lingering ghosts of my failed marriage.

Marcus walked out of the double doors a few minutes later, holding his thin briefcase.

He stopped when he saw me standing there, looking powerful and completely unbothered.

He hesitated, then slowly walked over to me.

“Clara,” Marcus whispered, his voice trembling with genuine regret. “I lost everything.”

I looked at him, feeling absolutely no pity for the broken man standing before me.

“No, Marcus,” I corrected him softly.

“You didn't lose everything. You threw it away because you were too arrogant to realize how lucky you were.”

I turned my back on him, walked down the marble steps, and climbed into the back of my waiting town car.

I didn't look back as the car pulled away, leaving him standing alone in the cold.
