Chapter 1 - The Audience Arrives

The heavy oak front door of my estate was unlocked.
I had deliberately left it that way.
I sat on my velvet sofa, swirling the vintage Bordeaux in my crystal glass, listening to the frantic, muffled screams echoing from the hallway.
Marcus was slamming his fists against the reinforced glass of the spa room.
Chloe was sobbing hysterically.
The sound was like a symphony to my ears.
Less than fifteen minutes after I sent that text to the Sterling family group chat, the first set of headlights swept across my driveway.
I didn't move an inch.
The front door creaked open, and Eleanor’s voice called out, dripping with her usual manufactured elegance.
“Clara, darling? We’re here! What is this big anniversary surprise?”
Right behind her walked Marcus’s younger brother, David, and his heavily pregnant wife, Sarah.
“Did he finally buy you that yacht?” David joked, stepping into the dimly lit foyer.
I remained seated, taking another slow sip of my wine.
“I’m in the living room, Eleanor,” I called out.
My voice was terrifyingly calm, smooth as silk, and completely devoid of warmth.
Eleanor walked in, wearing a designer trench coat I had paid for last Christmas.
She stopped when she saw me sitting alone in the dark, dressed in my tailored blazer, sipping wine while the elaborate seafood dinner rotted on the counter.
“Where is Marcus?” Eleanor asked, her perfectly drawn eyebrows furrowing in confusion.
Before I could answer, a loud, heavy thud echoed down the hallway.
“MOM! HELP!” Marcus bellowed from behind the frosted glass.
David froze. “What the hell is that?”
“That,” I smiled, setting my wine glass on the coffee table, “is the grand finale.”
I stood up and gestured toward the hallway.
“Right this way, family. You wouldn't want to miss the show.”
Eleanor’s face went pale, her maternal instincts finally kicking in as she practically sprinted down the hall.
David and Sarah followed closely behind, their faces etched with absolute confusion.
I walked behind them, savoring every single footstep.
When Eleanor reached the spa room, she grabbed the heavy brass handle and yanked.
It didn't budge.
The industrial deadbolt held firm.
“Marcus?!” Eleanor shrieked, pressing her face against the frosted glass. “What is going on in there?!”
“Mom, the door is locked! Clara locked us in!” Marcus yelled, his voice cracking with pure panic.
“Us?” David asked, stepping closer to the glass.
Through the thick, frosted panes, the blurry silhouettes of two completely naked bodies were pressed against the door.
One was clearly a tall, broad-shouldered man.
The other was a petite, slender woman, shivering and crying hysterically.
Sarah gasped, covering her mouth in sheer horror as the realization hit her.
Eleanor turned to me, her eyes wide with shock and terror.
“Clara, open this door immediately! This is a misunderstanding!” Eleanor demanded, her voice shaking.
I simply crossed my arms and looked at my mother-in-law with dead, hollow eyes.
“Oh, Eleanor,” I whispered. “I thought you wanted me to keep funding your retirement plan?”
Eleanor stopped breathing.

The blood instantly drained from her face, leaving her looking like a crumbling porcelain doll.
The game was over, and the lights had just been turned on.
