Chapter 8 - The Ambush

David’s jaw dropped.

Our quiet, manicured driveway was completely blocked by two massive, matte-black military Humvees. Flanking the vehicles were six heavily armed men wearing tactical gear, their faces completely stoic behind dark sunglasses.

Parked across the street were three dark sedans with government plates.

David stopped his car in the middle of the road, his heart suddenly hammering in his chest. Had something happened? Was it a terror threat? Why was the military at his house?

He slowly opened his car door and stepped out.

"Excuse me!" David called out, putting on his best authoritative, wealthy-white-man voice. "What is going on here? This is private property! Who is in charge?"

The front door of our house opened.

Marcus stepped out onto the porch. He was out of his fatigues, dressed in a sharp, tailored black suit that barely contained his muscular frame, but he moved with the lethal grace of a predator.

David frowned. He had never met Marcus. I had kept my family away from him to avoid conflict, a decision I now deeply regretted.

"Who the hell are you?" David demanded, marching up the driveway. "Get off my property before I call the police!"

Marcus didn't speak. He simply snapped his fingers.

Two of the tactical operators stepped forward, grabbing David by his arms and slamming him violently against the hood of his own sports car.

"Hey! What are you doing! Get off me!" David screamed, his voice cracking with pure terror as his face was pressed against the hot metal.

Marcus slowly walked down the steps, pulling a pristine white envelope from his inside pocket.

"My name is Captain Marcus Hayes," my brother said, his voice quiet, cold, and echoing with malice. "I am Sarah’s brother. And you are trespassing on her property."
