Chapter 2 - The Toast of the Town

Fifteen miles away, in the grand ballroom of the city’s most exclusive country club, David clinked his crystal champagne flute against his mother’s.
"To seventy years of elegance, Mother," David beamed, flashing his trademark charismatic smile.
Eleanor, draped in expensive silk and diamonds that cost more than most people's homes, preened under the attention. "Thank you, darling. And thank you for not letting Sarah’s little mood swings ruin our evening. I swear, that girl uses her pregnancy as a weapon to control you."
David took a sip of his champagne, adjusting his designer tie. "Don't worry about Sarah. She's just dramatic. She knows this is your night. She’ll pout for a day or two, and then she'll get over it."
His phone buzzed in his tuxedo pocket. He pulled it out, glancing at the caller ID.
City General Hospital.
David rolled his eyes. He tapped the "Decline" button and shoved the phone back into his pocket.
"Is she calling again?" Eleanor asked, her tone dripping with aristocratic disdain.
"It's the hospital," David scoffed. "She probably checked herself in just to make a point. She wants me to drop everything and rush to her side so she can play the victim. I'm not playing her game tonight."

"Good for you, David," his mother patted his cheek. "You need to set boundaries. Now, come along. The mayor is here, and I want you to network with his finance director."
David smiled, turning his back on his vibrating phone, entirely unaware that the woman he had vowed to protect was currently having her chest compressed by a trauma surgeon to keep her heart beating.
