Chapter 10 - The Fall of the House of David

Right on cue, two more vehicles pulled onto the street—unmarked FBI SUVs.

Four agents stepped out, walking briskly toward the driveway with handcuffs already unholstered.

"David Vance," the lead agent said, holding up a federal badge. "You are under arrest for wire fraud, embezzlement, and forgery. You have the right to remain silent."

"Fraud?" David shrieked, thrashing against the military operators as they handed him over to the FBI. "I didn't do anything! Sarah! Tell them! I'm your husband!"

"Not anymore," I said coldly.

"We audited your firm," Marcus leaned in close to David’s ear. "We found the offshore accounts. We found the forged signatures. And we found the money you funneled to your mother's estate. In fact, another federal team is currently kicking down Eleanor's door to arrest her for receiving stolen funds."

David stopped fighting. His legs gave out. If the FBI agents hadn't been holding him up, he would have collapsed onto the concrete. The reality of his absolute, complete ruin crashed down on him all at once. He was going to federal prison. His mother was going to prison. His reputation, his wealth, his family—gone in the span of a single weekend.

"Sarah, please," David wept, genuine tears of despair streaming down his face as they dragged him toward the SUV. "Please, don't do this!"

I watched them shove him into the back of the federal vehicle. I didn't feel a shred of pity. I didn't feel anything for him at all.

I looked up at my father, who placed a strong, comforting hand on my shoulder.

"It's over, sweetheart," General Hayes said softly. "You're safe now."

I nodded, turning my wheelchair toward the government sedans. "Take me back to the hospital, Dad. My son is waiting for me."

As the convoy pulled away from the house, leaving David’s empty sports car abandoned in the driveway, I looked out the window. The nightmare was finally over. I had survived, and thanks to the family I had finally let back in, David was going to spend the rest of his life paying for the day he left me on the kitchen floor.
