Chapter 9 - The Final Pieces

Friday morning, I received an urgent call from Detective Ramirez at the local precinct.
"Ms. Bennett, we need you to come down to the station immediately," he requested.
I drove to the police station with Julian right by my side for moral support.
Detective Ramirez led us into a small, sterile conference room filled with thick file boxes.
"We executed a search warrant on your mother's house early this morning regarding the assault charges," Ramirez explained.
"We found something incredibly disturbing hidden in her personal safe."
He slid a clear plastic evidence bag across the metal table.
Inside the bag was a small, unmarked glass vial containing a clear liquid, and a ledger.
"The liquid is a highly concentrated, untraceable digitalis extract," the detective stated grimly.
"It is a heart medication that, in large doses, causes a massive, fatal cardiac arrest."
The air rushed out of my lungs as the room started to spin violently.
My father didn't have a history of heart disease.
His sudden, fatal heart attack had baffled the paramedics at the time.
"She poisoned him," I choked out, tears of absolute horror spilling down my cheeks.
"She poisoned my dad to get the life insurance money to pay off her gambling debts."
Ramirez nodded slowly, his expression entirely sympathetic but firmly professional.
"The ledger details her exact dosing schedule over a period of three months."
"She slowly weakened his heart before delivering the final, lethal dose in his morning coffee."
Julian wrapped a strong, comforting arm around my shaking shoulders.
"Where is Eleanor now?" Julian demanded, his voice thick with barely suppressed rage.
"She fled the house before we arrived, likely tipped off by someone," Ramirez sighed.
"But she cannot hide forever, her passport is flagged, and her accounts are frozen."
