Chapter 5 - Freezing the Assets

The police arrived within five minutes, their sirens wailing through the quiet neighborhood.
Eleanor immediately switched into her fake, crying victim persona.
She tried to tell the officers that I was having a mental breakdown and had burned myself for attention.
Unfortunately for her, the emergency room doctor had documented the exact angle and severity of the splash burns.
The police officers did not buy her terrible acting for a single second.
They escorted Eleanor and Chloe off the property, warning them not to return.
The moment they were gone, I drove straight to the central branch of our commercial bank.
I sat down with the branch manager, sliding my legal identification across the polished mahogany desk.
"I need to freeze all outgoing transfers from the Bennett Bistro corporate accounts," I demanded.
The manager typed frantically on his keyboard, his eyebrows shooting up in surprise.
"Ms. Bennett, someone is currently trying to wire sixty thousand dollars from this account to an offshore holding company."
My heart skipped a beat.
Eleanor was trying to drain the operating funds to pay off her illegal gambling debts.
"Decline the transfer and lock the account down entirely," I ordered without hesitation.
"Only I have the authorization to release funds moving forward."
The manager nodded, hitting a few buttons that effectively cut off Eleanor's entire cash supply.
I walked out of the bank feeling a massive surge of adrenaline and power.
For years, I had let them treat me like a disposable workhorse.
I had mistakenly believed that my hard work would eventually earn their love and respect.
Now, I realized that power was the only language these people actually understood.
My phone buzzed in my pocket, displaying an unknown number.
"Samantha?" a deep, raspy voice asked when I answered.
May you like
"Who is this?" I demanded.
"I am the man your mother owes a lot of money to, and since you froze the accounts, you and I need to have a little chat."
